Tree work Knoxville homeowners ask about most
Tree removal
Dead, dying, leaning or unwanted trees, including big oaks, tulip poplars and pines close to the house. On Knoxville’s hillside and ridge lots, removals often have to be rigged down in sections, which affects price and equipment.
Tree trimming & pruning
Limbs over the roof, branches rubbing the gutters, clearance over driveways, and thinning to reduce storm risk. Late fall and winter are a good window for routine pruning of most deciduous trees.
Stump grinding
Grinding a stump below grade so you can mow, replant or lay sod. Ask how deep they grind, and whether the grindings are hauled away or left as mulch.
Storm, wind & ice damage
East Tennessee gets ice storms in winter and severe thunderstorms in spring. Ice can add a lot of weight to limbs, and Bradford pears and pines are known for splitting. If a tree is on a structure or a line, see the safety steps below first.
What does tree removal cost in Knoxville?
There’s no single price. Height, trunk size, lean, how close the tree is to the house or lines, access for equipment, and cleanup all change the number. That’s why an in-person quote matters. As a rough guide, here are ranges Knoxville tree companies publish themselves:
| Source (published by a Knoxville-area tree company) | Range |
|---|---|
| Typical tree removal | $300 to $3,000+ |
| Single tree removal | $400 to $1,800 |
| Small trimming jobs | Starting around $250 |
Ranges as published on the websites of two local tree companies (whitestreeservices.com and knoxlandservices.com), checked November 2026. Your quote may be higher or lower. Emergency and crane work typically costs more.
Before you hire anyone
- Get the scope and total price in writing.
- Ask for a certificate of insurance (general liability, and workers’ comp if they have employees) sent from the insurer.
- In Knox County, a job from $3,000 to $24,999 needs a Tennessee Home Improvement license. Check at verify.tn.gov.
- Be wary of anyone who shows up after a storm asking for large cash payments up front. The Tennessee Attorney General issued a consumer alert about tree trimming and removal scams in February 2026.
If a tree is down on your house, car or a power line
- Get people and pets away from the damaged area. Don’t stay in a room with a tree through the roof.
- Stay at least 30 feet away from any downed or sagging line, and assume it is live. Report it to your electric utility (KUB in its service area) or call 911.
- Don’t try to cut a tree that is under tension, touching a line, or resting on the structure.
- If it’s safe, take photos for your insurance company before anything is moved.
- Then send an emergency request and choose “Emergency” for urgency.

Common questions
Are you a tree service company?
No. Knoxville Tree Quotes is a free referral service. We pass your request to independent local tree service companies, and they contact you, look at the tree, and quote the job directly. We never do tree work, and we never set prices.
What does it cost me?
Nothing. The quote request is free and there is no obligation. Participating tree companies may pay us for referrals, which is how this site is funded.
Does a Knoxville tree company need a license?
Tennessee has no license specific to tree work. But Knox County has adopted the state Home Improvement license for residential jobs from $3,000 to $24,999, and the state definition of home improvement covers work on land and landscaping. Jobs of $25,000 or more need a Tennessee contractor license anywhere in the state. You can look up any company at verify.tn.gov in about a minute.
What should a written tree quote include?
Which trees or limbs are being worked on, whether the wood is hauled away or left, whether limbs are chipped, whether the stump is ground (and how deep), cleanup of the work area, any crane or bucket-truck charges, and the total price. If it isn’t in writing, ask.
A tree fell on my house or power line. What first?
Get everyone out of the damaged area and stay at least 30 feet from any downed line. Report downed lines to your electric utility (KUB inside its service area) or 911. Take photos for your insurer before cleanup if it is safe. Then request emergency tree help.
When is the best time to trim trees in Knoxville?
For most deciduous trees, late fall through winter (dormant season) is a good time for routine pruning. You can see the branch structure, and many tree companies are less busy than in spring. Dead or hazardous limbs should be dealt with whenever you notice them.
